  • ✓Buddy Guy's Legends, the blues club, sits a few blocks away, and Grant Park is effectively on the doorstep.

The best base for a museum-heavy trip

If Museum Campus is the centerpiece of your Chicago trip, South Loop is the obvious base: the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium are all within an easy walk, alongside Grant Park and Soldier Field. It's a quieter, more residential-feeling stretch of downtown than the Loop or River North, with a food and coffee scene that's grown alongside the neighborhood's newer apartment towers rather than existing purely to serve tourists.

It also tends to be the value play among downtown areas — hotel rates here often run a notch gentler than River North's or Gold Coast's, without sacrificing L access to the rest of the city. Buddy Guy's Legends, the blues club, sits a few blocks north, giving South Loop a genuine after-dark option beyond Museum Campus's daytime draw.

Getting around, and booking a room

The Red, Green and Orange Lines all reach South Loop, with the Roosevelt stop putting Museum Campus and Grant Park within a short walk. Reaching River North or the Mag Mile takes a bit longer than from a Loop hotel, but for a trip centered on the museums and the lakefront, South Loop is arguably the more efficient choice, not just the cheaper one.

As with every area covered here, we don't publish specific hotel names, star ratings or nightly rates — South Loop's hotel supply has grown quickly and any number would date fast; where we do link to a property, it's through Booking.com for live rates.

  • Best for: Museum Campus visits, value-conscious downtown stays.
  • Red, Green and Orange Lines, with the Roosevelt stop closest to Museum Campus.
  • Generally gentler rates than River North or Gold Coast for a comparable downtown location.
