- ✓Gold Coast and Streeterville sit one or two blocks off North Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile, trading a little foot traffic for quieter, more residential streets.
- ✓Best for: a quieter luxury stay near the Mag Mile's shopping, with lake and Navy Pier access from the Streeterville side.
- ✓Gold Coast is Chicago's most historically upscale residential neighborhood, lined with 19th-century mansions and townhouses; Streeterville leans denser and more modern, closer to the water.
- ✓Both are walkable to Michigan Avenue shopping and a short ride, or a longer walk, from the Loop's museums and theater district.
Two upscale neighborhoods, one hotel corridor
Gold Coast and Streeterville are often shorthanded together, but they carry distinct characters. Gold Coast is Chicago's oldest and most consistently upscale residential neighborhood — tree-lined streets of 19th-century mansions and townhouses just west of Michigan Avenue, quiet enough to feel a step removed from the Mag Mile's crowds. Streeterville, on the eastern side, runs denser and more modern, closer to the lakefront and to Navy Pier, with a mix of high-rise hotels and residential towers.
Together they suit a traveler who wants Michigan Avenue's shopping and the lakefront within reach, without staying directly on top of either. It's a genuinely upscale corridor, well suited to a slower-paced, more indulgent stay — a good match for couples, luxury travelers, and families who'll use Navy Pier and the lakefront path more than the museum-heavy sights further south.
Getting around, and booking a room
The Red Line's Chicago and Clark/Division stops serve the western edge of Gold Coast, and both neighborhoods are an easy walk to Michigan Avenue shopping. Streeterville adds proximity to Navy Pier and the Lakefront Trail that Gold Coast doesn't have. Reaching the Loop's museums and theater district takes a bit longer than from River North or the Loop itself — a comfortable walk for some, better handled by bus or a short ride for others.
