Chicago With Kids: 2-Day Family Itinerary

Museum Campus, the zoo, and Navy Pier paced for nap schedules and short attention spans — not a compressed adult itinerary with a kid tacked on.

The short version
  • ✓Paced explicitly for nap schedules and shorter attention spans — this is not the two-day adult itinerary with a museum swapped in.
  • ✓Leans on free and low-cost stops, especially the zoo and the lakefront, to balance the two paid museum days.
  • ✓Builds in downtime between big activities on purpose, rather than treating rest as wasted itinerary space.
  • ✓Lincoln Park makes a genuinely good family base — leafy, close to the zoo, and near the lakefront.
  • ✓Museum Campus deserves a slower pace with kids than the adult itineraries give it — plan a half-day per stop, not a full-day sprint through all three.

Day one: Museum Campus, at a kid's pace

Pick one Museum Campus stop for the morning rather than attempting all three — the Field Museum's dinosaurs or Shedd Aquarium's belugas both hold a child's attention far better than a rushed march between institutions. Build in a real break before or after lunch; a bench by the lake or a stretch of the lakefront path resets energy faster than pushing straight into a second activity. If naps are still part of your family's day, treat the early afternoon as protected time rather than something to work around.

Save the second Museum Campus institution for a return trip rather than cramming it into the same day. Kids get tired of museums faster than adults expect, and a itinerary that respects that will actually get used instead of abandoned by 2pm. If energy allows, a short lakefront walk to close the day works better than another indoor stop.

Day two: the zoo and Navy Pier

Start day two at Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the last free, privately managed zoos in the country — no ticket line to manage before nap time, and enough open green space around it to let kids run before or after. It pairs naturally with a Lincoln Park base, and the surrounding neighborhood has enough low-key food options to make lunch simple rather than a production.

Give the afternoon to Navy Pier, but treat it as a shorter visit than an adult itinerary would: the Centennial Wheel and a walk along the pier cover the highlights without needing to work through every attraction. Watch the fireworks if your family's bedtime allows it, but don't force a late night just to catch them — a calmer end to day two beats a cranky ride home for the sake of one more activity.

  • Day one: one Museum Campus stop, paced with a real midday break.
  • Day two: Lincoln Park Zoo in the morning, Navy Pier (shortened) in the afternoon.
  • Protect nap and rest time on purpose — this itinerary is built around it, not despite it.
